Hello, it is not true that tanning salons reduce the risk of breat cancer.

breast cancer is commonly due to genetic disorders or oestrogen disorders, and UV light would not have an effect on these levels.

However UV light does greatly increase the risk of skin cancer, by producing radicals that damage DNA.

In short one should avoid tanning salons to reduce risk of skin cancer.

If worried about obtaining breast cancer i would advise regular check ups that your GP can organise, especially if you have a family history. Every 6 months may be appropriate.

thats great! breast cancer occurence increases with age also, so make sure you continue to go to your mammogram appointments all the best!

Avoid sun exposure in the middle of the day (10am - 2 pm or 11 am - 3pm daylight savings) when UV is at it's peak. Stay in the shade or wear hat and long sleaves and pants.

If his lungs are filled with water he would be in a hospital and this is called ascites. You are giving such little information it is hard to answer you, but if he was diagnosed 2 years ago and is undergoing chemo and has ascites now he likely has stage 4 disease which is not curable.

Cancer in the part of the pancreas known as the head can at first cause symptoms similar to gall bladder disease. An ultra sound of the gall bladder area or a cat scan of the upper abdomen will give the diagnosis. Unfortunately by the time pancreatic cancer becomes a cause of symptoms it is usually not curable whereas gall bladder disease is alleviated by removing the gall bladder(cholecystectomy). I hope this helps.

Anyone with sarcoma should be treated only by a sarcoma specialist at a sarcoma center. Your brother needs to be referred immediately. You do not mention what type of sarcoma he has . . there are over 60 subtypes. MD Anderson is an excellent facility . He should have his local oncologist make a referral if possible, otherwise call them yourselves.

It is impossible just from your question to understand what treatment your brother underwent or even if it was appropriate for his type of cancer. Sarcoma is rare and should always be treated by someone who has experience with the disease.

There are online support groups where your brother can join and talk with other patients with the same disease . . find out where they were treated and locate the best way to proceed or not proceed depending on his situation.

Good websites to check out . . online support for sarcoma:

Sarcoma Alliance
http://www.sarcomaalliance.org/main.shtml

Liddy Shriver Initiative - Sarcoma help
http://sarcomahelp.org/

ACOR - Sarcoma Support Listserv
http://listserv.acor.org/SCRIPTS/WA-ACOR.EXE?A0=SARCOMA

The ACOR site is active and can offer ideas as well as support if you reach out. But, of course, much of this will depend on your brother and his wishes at this point.

You've already had this question answered. If that website really said that, then they are talking crap.

Gynaecomastia is not cancer.

Gynaecomastia is very common in adolescent boys.

No adolescent boy has ever been diagnosed with breast cancer. The youngest man, by any years, ever diagnosed with breast cancer was 24. His case made news internationally.

Breast cancer is almost unheard of in women under 25, is extremely rare in women unde 30 (fewer than 0.1% of those diagnosde) and very rare in women under 40.

Men make up fewer than 1% of all those diagnosed with breast cancer. Most men diagnosed with breast cancer are over 60.

No teenage male has ever been diagnosed with breast cancer

I suggest that if you're going to read about breast cancer on the internet you do it on reputable and reliable breast cancer sites:

http://www.breastcancer.org

http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk

http://breakthrough.org.uk/

Do a searchfor 'male' and 'gynaecomastia' (gynecomastia on the first one as it's American). And take notice of what they tell you.

EDIT: forgot to mention - even in women over 50, most breast lumps are not cancerous; over 80% of breast lumps considered suspicious enough for biopsy are found to be benign. And pain is in fact rarely a sign of breast cancer; most people diagnosed with breast cancer have felt no pain.

Simply be yourself, and tell him even though you don't fully understand what he is going through that you will be praying for him and that you would like to be a friend that he can talk to. Just help him be comfortable ,with a pillow or blanket, a drink etc.., talk to him like he is your best friend forever. Try to make him laugh, and tell him some of your secrets so he feels like a part of your life.
Just tell him that even though you don't know him that well that you love him as a great friend.
Also if you can get him to tell you stories of his life and the things he has been through. It will help him feel alive again when he is able to give you his wisdom. Tell him you can not wait till the next time for another story, give him some thing to look forward to.
Above all be a good listener and quick with a prayer for him.
I shure do hope this has helped you, I think it is so sweet of you to want to reach out to a stranger you don't know very well to help and comfort them !
God bless you Dear! ;)

Be a good science student and ask the teacher for their references. Yes some cancers are caused by exposure to products (e.g. smoking) but there are many that have no known source or cause, e.g. many of the childhood cancers.

Man can control the probability of getting cancer by limited the risk factors such as avoiding UV rays to avoid skin cancer. But not all cancers are man made.

No one knows how long someone gets to live. The best we can do is a general guess by the information we have on other people with the same condition, but you don’t say what that is. We need to know what kind of cancer she had, the grade, the stage, tumor size and hormone receptor status. All I can tell you based on the information provided is she would have a better prognosis if she were 60 or 70 years old than she does at 40. Also, because of this you and if you have any sisters need to start screening when you are 30 years old.

First, put all that energy you are wasting on worry to better use. The numbers are not nearly as glum as the TV news would have you think. Generally, the best prevention is to eat a diet primarily consisting of raw fruits and vegetables. Roasted or steamed is ok too, but raw is better. Berries are low in calories and high in the good stuff, so try to have them in the mix.

Vitamins can be good, but do not go over board. Do some regular exercise, including weights.

Invest some time and cash in research - subscribe to "Prevention" or other journal of healthy living.

Oh yes, see a doctor at least once a year for blood work and check up.

Good Luck!

Five days after mastectomy physician called her back saying lymph nodes were involved and in two weeks she'd be informed whether she needed a pill or chemo. This is the most common duct cancer and she had mammogram this time last year.

Are you sure it's not just the muscle tissue in your breasts? If it is breast cancer, it would feel hard and you wouldn't be able to move it around at all. Give yourself a breast exam (there are instructions online) and compare how each breast feels. If they feel the same and you don't have a lump that feels hard and immobile, kind of like a rock, then you are most likely fine. Besides, I'm guessing that you are in high school or middle school, and generally people your age don't get breast cancer.

Functions
The pituitary hormones help control some of the following body processes:

Growth
Blood pressure
Some aspects of pregnancy and childbirth including stimulation of uterine contractions during childbirth
Breast milk production
Sex organ functions in both men and women
Thyroid gland function
The conversion of food into energy (metabolism)
Water and osmolarity regulation in the body
Secretes ADH (antidiuretic hormone) to control the absorption of water into the kidneys
Temperature regulation

It goes without saying that when something is referred to as a “master gland”, chances are it’s pretty important. The pituitary gland is considered one of the master glands of the body due to the fact that it regulates hormone production that is critical to our health and well-being. This feat is made even more amazing when one considers that the overall size of the pituitary gland is on the same level as a pea. That’s a lot of functionality contained in such a small size!

Taking Care of Your Pituitary Gland
A balanced diet is the best way to ensure that your pituitary gland continues working as it needs to. This means a diet that has plenty of fruits, vegetables, proteins, and complex carbohydrates without a lot of fat, sugar, or cholesterol. Taking a multivitamin supplement to catch what your diet doesn’t cover in the way of nutrients is also important. Exercise is just as important — you will need to make sure that you’re getting regular aerobic activity to stimulate blood flow and keep your body running smoothly.

Understanding How The Pituitary Gland Works
This highly important “master gland” doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves given its importance to our overall health. As mentioned earlier, the purpose of the pituitary gland is to produce and regulate hormones. One of the most common hormones produced is growth hormone. This vital hormone helps kids grow up strong by stimulating growth, and helps adults maintain muscle and bone mass. This hormone also affects fat distribution in the body as a whole.

Problems Related to the Pituitary Gland
One of the biggest problems that plague the pituitary gland are pituitary tumors. These are not as uncommon as one would think and are generally not cancerous in nature. They form when some of the cells in the pituitary gland grow too fast and can be organized into two types. Two types of tumors exist - secretory and non-secretory.

The first type are secretory, which basically produce too much of a certain hormone, and the second type are non-secretory, which are troublesome due to their large size. Non-secretory pituitary tumors can press against the brain and cause headaches and other issues that have to be addressed.

There are treatment options for handling pituitary tumors. This is usually done through medications that lower or increase hormone levels depending on the specific issue the patient is having. If that doesn’t take care of the problem, more aggressive methods such as surgery and/or radiation treatment can be applied. This is usually saved as a last resort after drug therapy doesn’t fully take care of the issue. The goal of the surgery process is to fully remove all of the tumor so that healthy function can be restored to the pituitary gland.

Overall, the pituitary gland is a very important part of the body that needs to be cared for and protected just as you would take care of any other body part. Good rest, exercise and a balanced diet can help you keep this vital gland in tip top shape.

What she eats has nothing to do with this. It would be unusual to take tomoxifen the rest of one’s life. If you want facts and figures you should speak to her oncologist as they have all the information to answer you that is specific to your mother we don’t. The chance of recurrence is not based solely on taking the drug or not her age, tumor size, hormone receptor status, histology, stage and grade all have to be known.

My wife had a Port A Cath put in for her chemotherapy too, and overall it was a good thing. The procedure takes about 45 minutes or so, and then you will be good to go.

After a week of having it in our cat walked on it when she was sleeping and it sort of "tilted" a little and from there it was never comfortable. You will have some discomfort but it will go away and you will get used to it. Now my wife is 52 years old and you are much younger so you will probably be able to handle it better than she did.

It will REALLY help you because you will not get an injection for blood draws (they will take it from the port). I now remember what she had to do before they accessed it.

She used a rub on the area so that it would not hurt (numbs area) and she did it about an hour or so before chemotherapy.

I wish you the best, often it is the fear of the unknown that scares us, so looking back my wife says it was not that bad and she was glad she went through it.
