That is way too high for a non diabetic.
    Fasting sugar levels should be 4 - 6 mmol/L.
So yes, this person needs follow up as they probably have diabetes.
Get back to your doctor asap

    Normal Fasting Blood Sugar
A normal fasting blood sugar (which is also the blood sugar a normal person will see right before a meal) is:

    83 mg/dl (4.6 mmol/L) or less.

Many normal people have fasting blood sugars in the mid and high 70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/L) range.

Though most doctors will tell you any fasting blood sugar under 100 mg/dl (5.6 mmol/L) is "normal", there are several studies that suggest that testing with a fasting blood sugar in the mid 90 mg/dl (5 mmol/L) range often predicts diabetes that is diagnosed a decade later.
    Post-Meal Blood Sugar (Postprandial)
Independent of what they eat, the blood sugar of a truly normal person is:

    Under 120 mg/dl (6.6 mmol/L) one or two hours after a meal.

A sign, Yes. Bigger than a billboard...No doubt that you have diabetes. Not good at all. Much damage is being done to eyes , Kidneys , heart (Vascular system ) nerves ect. Need treatment now . Along with a Glycemic diet and exercise. http://www.mendosa.com/gilists.htm

    What you waiting for ?

In a 'normal' person,m the blood sugar will virtually never, ever push over 11.
    So 17, is a problem.

Some things can affect sugar levels other than diabetes, e.g steroids, some drugs. Either way, that level of sugar is far to high to be continued,

same question i have been asking, should i be hospitalized if the readings are double digits?

my readings are up to 29 mmol/L, having double digits i pees a lot, dehydrated. having double digits readings are because of low insuline production. insuline is the substance convert glucose into energy, if the glucose is not converted to energy and stays with the blood, the blood becomes thicker (viscosity increased) and cause heart attack or stroke, this is called diabetes complication. diabetes complication happened if the double digits condition is prolonged, how long nobody knows, for me i have that condition for 3 months

it is hard to find a good doctor, a good doctor gave me 2000mg glumetza (may not be covered by insurance) and brought the reading down to single digit, also the doctor sent me to hospital clinic for diet education. if double digits readings failed to come down with 2000mg oral medicine, i have to be given insuline injection.

double digits readings diabetes is not caused by poor diet, it was caused by emotional disturbed like anger, worry depressed, at one time i was angry and the reading shoot up to 29, when i calm down, it lowered to 19. just like insomnia, dont worry if you cannot sleep, the more you worry the more you will not be able to sleep. if your glucose readings are high, dont worry, if you worry it will be continuously high. but take action and find a good doctor to avoid complication if the high readings condition is prolonged
