    The orthoptist.

Orthoptics deals with the diagnosis and treatment of defective eye movement and coordination and amblyopia.

Optometry deals with eye structures, vision, visual systems, vision information processingand the treatment of eye diseases such as infections and glaucoma.

I say optometrist, but I'm admittedly biased.

edit: definitely *NOT* the ophthalmologist. the only time an ophthalmologist needs to get involved is when non-accommodative strabismus is present, which is actually not all that common. most ophthalmologists don't want to have anything to do with the *actual* amblyopia therapy (patching regimen, etc). they want to do the surgery & get out. plus they're generally considered to be notoriously bad refractionists.

to "good": yes, most orthoptists know their stuff
