Any risk with eyeglasses at all?

(4 posts)
  1. I know there are risks with contacts for sure. ^^ But curious about glasses (disregarding issues where the glass breaks or something)

I've been wearing glasses since I was ten (I'd needed them before we figured out since I was always getting really close to the VCR to see the time, but they hadn't caught any problems) and after that I kept them on all the time and gradually my vision without glasses got worse. Now it's where I need a stronger prescription every year.
Is it because my eyes started depending on the glasses, or would they have gotten weaker regardless of whether or not I wore glasses - cause I'm 'legally blind' now.
That's the only situation I can think of where glasses can be risky. And does wearing them limit oxygen flow like contacts?
If that's true there are a lot of people with naturally poor vision! 8O (thanks for the phrase also [refractive error])
@Foot- Thanks! (all of you) And good to know!
@Inspector- That means my eyes are growing in a very bad way. -.- At this rate all I won't be able to see up close without glasses in a couple of years. >8O

Optometry is interesting though..It seems.. widely..believed that glasses don't make your eyes weak though. So I now I can feel that I'm not betraying myself wearing glasses XD

[if anyone has anything to add, please do so]

No, all the studies done show that refractive error isn't affected by wearing correction or not - your eyes would be just as bad now as if you'd never worn glasses.

Glasses don't get in the way of oxygen transmission either - air easily gets around even the closest fitting glasses.

Legally blind is thrown around so much with no understanding of what it is.

If you are reading the type in these messages, you aren't legally blind.

Your vision without glasses on has no bearing at all. Legally blind is someone who can't see better that 20/200 WITH glasses ON , or has a restricted field of vision of 20 degrees or less, instead of the normal 160 - 170 degrees.

So, as long as you are seeing well with your glasses, you can't be legally blind.

I just wanted to clear that part up...Kdawg already answered the rest.

increase in prescription is not due to wearing glasses. It's because you are growing and your eyes are growing as well.

no medical risk with glasses. Just have them made properly and get UV coating as well as impact resistant lens.
