I started a course of penicillin and a few days later I started to get hives and they eventually covered my body. Now the hives have sort of gone flat into red itchy blotches that all join on my skin- gets much worse and spreads more where I am wearing clothes (ie. my back- and not really clothes, PJs because it's all I can bear to put on!). It looks a little like psoriasis. It's stil spreading and now on my face and neck. I haven't taken a pill since I found out I was allergic but is this reaction normal?
The psoriasis type rash is just angioedema- researched it!

That allergic reaction is dangerous, no telling what's happening inside your body that you cannot see.
You should get to a doctor right away, , he can give you a shot of antihistamine that will combat the allergic reaction quickly. If you don't treat it fast, it could interfere with your breathing. GET TO A DOCTOR QUICKLY, to a emergency room.Posted 2 years ago # -
Take a benadryl & see if that helps with the hives, if it does, then yes it was a reaction to the penicillin.

It does not seem to be allergic reaction to penicillin as allergic rashes mostly disappear after the medicine is stpped. You may developped some viral infection like Chicken pox.

The eruption should get you back immediately to the doctor who prescribed the penicillin :
It could be reaction to penicillin, though the few day delay seems to point against allergic reaction which usually starts much sooner.
Another possibility is the penicillin antibiotic killed off your normal skin bacteria, allowing a fungal overgrowth that is normally held in check by skin bacteria.
Or it could be something else altogether.Either way, you must go back to your doctor.
>> P/S : Can't assume the rash is "angioedema".
Many skin eruptions look similar & even doctors have difficulty ascertaining what it really is.
Need medical attention & follow up.Posted 2 years ago # -
