Any thing that increases pumping load on heart or devoids heart of oxygen and nutreints can cause it to hypertrophy (increasing muscle size of heart) eventually fail and enlarge.

Long standing untreated Hypertension(increase in BP) does both-

    1. It makes heart exert more to pump same amount of blood , thus increased load on heart

    2. It is a risk factor of ATHEROSCLEROSIS (occlusive disease of coronary arteries supplying heart with oxygen and required nutreints)

Controll hypertension. Best drugs for controlling BP and specifically preventing heart enlargement ARE---

1.. ACE inhibitors -- ramipril, enalapril, lisinopril

    2. Angiotensin receptor blockers -- Losartan, valsartan, candysartan, olmesartan, telmisartan
