Can I get birth control pills for free? (17)?

(5 posts)
  1. I've had my period for 2 1/2 years now (started late) and I am 17 years old. So far I had terrible ovulation pain and premenstrual cramps, where stupid ibuprofen or mydol don't even work that well =[ I have on occasion missed a day of school because of it. Also It is soooo irregular! I've hated this ever sense I started, and I'm not sexually active or even wish to be. So I've done research and it's said that birth control can be very effective in having regular period cycles as well as getting rid of or greatly reducing menstrual pain...I was about to bring this up to my mom, but I'm from a traditionalist country and she flipped out on me when I heard about the gardasil shot and asked to go get it even (Cuz at the time I didn't know hpv was an std!). And I can't imagine what she would say/ let alone let me if I was to bring up taking BCP. I don't know, do I make a meeting with planned parent hood or something? Or do I have to talk to my doctor (who I hate) who is also my moms doctor, to write me a prescription (wouldn't my mom know?) Does my mom HAVE to know since I'm not 18 too? I just need to find something that works for me =[[[[ and am I allowed to get it without a prescription and for free because I don't have a job right now? (and of course my mom would ask whats the money for). What can I do? or do i just have to wait till 18 and at college away from my mom?

    Thank you
    thanks for the answers,

and I know she should, but I get my mom. I'll just get the vaccine next year on my own anyway, but I still don't plan on being sexually active.

Find your local Health Department. They will provide you with free birth control. I would suggest the nuvaring to regualte periods. Thats what they put me on and i LOVE it. Any ways.. get a phone book or something and find ur Health Department. Call them and make an appointment. ITs free and they dont tell your parents if you dont want them to.

You will still have to pay for them, but you mom doesn't have to know. You can just go into the doctor at any age and say you want it for your periods. They will give you a perscription and voila ! :)
I think she should be supporting your desicion, I mean gardisel can prevent you from this for a long time, so you could tell her even if your not needing its uses now, you will be in the future.

You can go to your doctor, it doesn't matter if it is also your mothers doctor, they are not allowed to discuss anything you have said with anyone else - if they did they'd be fired. You would require a prescription and you would not be able to get it for free, so either you pay for it or you talk to your mother, but let her know the situation, sit down and talk to her like an adult, she can only say no.

THE PILL DOES NOT REGULATE YOUR PERIODS!

It suppresses your cycles stopping ovulation so preventing menstruation, the bleeding you get on the pill is withdrawal bleeding caused by the drop in synthetic hormones, your own hormones and reproductive functions are not responsible. Bleeding is regular because you regularly stop taking the pills or take different pills to make you bleed. While on birth control you don't actually menstruate at all. Birth control thus does not regulate your periods, it just hides the symptoms.

I'd also say that although it is an option in dealing with painful periods - again because it stops you menstruating all together - that is a very extreme way of dealing with it! Hormonal birth control effects your whole body so there is a risk of side-effects, in suppressing your cycles you are also effecting how you care for your sexual health long-term, and again it will be covering up the problem so if your menstrual health problems are caused by something more serious you will just be hiding the problem rather than treating it, which isn't healthy.

I would recommend doing more research to find ways of regulating your cycles - black cohosh and evening primrose oil, along with a healthy lifestyle will help. I would also point out that given your age irregular cycles is totally normal, it takes time for everything in your reproductive cycle to work together, don't expect your periods to be regular until you're in your twenties. Also talk to your doctor about your irregular cycles, they will be able to run tests to find the cause and give you appropriate treatment to help regulate your cycles. Same goes for cramps, ibuprofen and mydol are of course not going to do anything! In fact they may make your cramps progressively worse over time, I would suggest looking into the causes of your cramps and different treatments, you'll find a few suggestions in my answer here - http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AicUlkLDJO1T96psuUOol.EhBgx.;_ylv=3?qid=20100205133048AA1uvW1&show=7#profile-info-AA10814887

It's your choice if you want to use the pill, but you would be far better off actually treating the problem rather than hiding it by suppressing your cycles, you need to make an educated decision.
