Why won't the doctor give her a rx for an alternative? That's disgraceful! Sometimes you've got to get ugly when it comes to the care of someone you love. Remember, these doctor's are working for you. Neupogen is used to boost the white blood cell count to ensure that your grandmother will be ready for her next treatment. I don't think the ER would provide Neupogen. Call the insurance provider. Why would they cover chemotherapy treatments and not the recovery drug? Maybe check into state medicaid. Good luck to you.

There are several meds that treat neutropenia besides neupogen, not to mention the generic version of neupogen that costs about 260.00. If someone needs the drug, they won't be able to get chemo until their blood is normal, so it would make sense she would be given generic form of drug or just given injection at dr's. Beside's if a pharmacy doesn't carry any drug, they order it and drs know to inform patient of this and have them contact pharmacy in advance.

The same thing happened to me, they refused the prescription and said it was not covered by insurance. A six day supply for us cost $12,500+ and we needed 15 weeks of it. The hospital fronted me the doses and I had to somehow get payment to them for it.
I went straight to my wife's oncologist and told her that we cannot afford it and she said she would personally call my insurance carrier. After our oncologist talked to them they set us up with home delivery of the product and it ended up costing us only $200.00 a month.
Talk to your oncologist and have them tell the carrier that she needs it to survive.
Good luck,
Dave
