I recently learned that I have extremely low Vitamin D level, which I believe is the source of my overwhelming fatigue. My doc. prescribed me 5000 units of Vitamin D medication (to be taken once a week). I will begin taking it tomorrow but am worried because my lack of energy has affected my ability to think sharply and it takes me an extremely long time to do things that require concentration because I am so tired often. In addition to taking Vitamin D and making sure to go out for 15+ minutes when it is sunny, is there any other quick fix I could use to resolve my energy drain relatively quickly? I would exercise, but I twisted my knee the wrong way a few days ago and it hurts quite a bit. How long does it take for the prescribed Vitamin D2 supplement to boost my energy?
P.S. Coffee/Caffeine products only make me sleepy. Thanks!

Hi Angie,
It can take several weeks to restore your vitamin D level to normal. This is because vitamin D is toxic in too large of a dose (as are many other vitamins) and must be given slowly. Be sure your doctor has checked you for any other conditions which can result in decreased energy and decreased mental acuity. Anemia, vitamin B deficiencies, and very commonly, low thyroid can cause you to be drained of energy. If you don't turn up much, you should also consider getting a mental health evaluation, as depression can rob you of energy and impair your thinking. Depression can have an insidious onset. That is too say, those with depression do not always feel particularly sad, they may just feel that they have lost some of their usual zest for life. Be sure you and your doctor have covered all the bases so you can start feeling better ass soon as possible. Best of luck.
