I go to the dentist every six months and every time the dentist takes two xrays, one on each side. Why does she do this? I've probably had about six or seven xrays from her now, much more than I've even had from my orthodontist who I've been going to since I was eight(now I 16). Is this normal? I don't really like it. I've told my mom and she seems to be a little worried but she also says "they know what their doing". Do they do this because I have braces and they can't check everywhere for cavities? I just don't understand why in the world they do this every single time I go there.

You are supposed to get those xrays every time you go to the dentist. They are used to check for cavitites because not all cavities are able to be seen, but they will show up on the xray. The orthodontist doesn't need so many xrays because they are just trying to get your teeth straight. The dentist is trying to see if your teeth are healthy. If you ever have a question or concern about a treatment, you can ask your doctor or dentist. They will answer your questions and explain why they are doing what they are doing.

  3. In the UK it is recommended that All New Patients who see a new dentist for the first time have routine X-Rays taken, after that it's normally about 24 months before the next set of X-Rays are taken.
If you are in the high risk group which means you are prone to cavities/decay the dentist will take X-Rays more frequently to keep an eye on things.
You should speak to your dentist and ask her why she's taking X-Rays at every visit!

  4. Unless you have a high decay rate, the norm in most offices is to take 2 bite wing x-rays yearly. Also while undergoing orthodontics, the brackets, bands, and wires make it impossible for the x-rays to pick up a lot of decay. So to answer your questions, I personally think this is excessive.
