Last night I went to bed around 10:00pm and I was VERY sleepy. So i had found a comfortable spot and closed my eyes and tried to drift off to sleep, but, for some odd reason i couldn't fall asleep!! I was comfortable, tired, and now confused. Before I tried to go to sleep the activity i was doing was reading a sad novel and drinking tea with little sugar. This went on for a long time and next thing you know its 3:00am!! I tried counting sheep, emptying my mind, thinking about boring things that make me fall asleep, and listening to soft music! But nothing works! There is no sound in my room and my room is all dark, so nothing in my room should have kept me awake. I have to wake up at 6:00am to get ready for school, but i can't get ready all sleepy and pissed off fo not getting sleep... But too late it's already 6:33am...

I tried telling my mom this but she said that i have to go to school to turn in my late work and make up missed tests from last week... So i can't miss school today to get sleep. This problem occurred other times too and the same result has happened.

Other Details- I am a healthy 13 year old girl looking for answers so please help.

    So what I'm wondering is.....

    1. Is this a sleeping problem? if so, what is it called?
    2. What causes this?
    3. What can I do to fall asleep when this problem happens.
    4. What can I do to prevent this from happening?
    5. Is this normal?

Part of the issue may be the late work and missed tests you need to face the next day. I get a little wound with things to do and bingo...no sleep no matter what 'relaxing' things I try to do to help. Also worrying about not being able to sleep....prevents me sleeping.

    I suggest:

    1. Stop thinking about the next day. Get out of bed and write down what you need to get done and when you are going to do it, this helps your mind move on.

2.Stop thinking about trying to sleep. I find once I 'give up' and resolve that I'm going to be awake all night and I don't care..I fall asleep soon after.

    3. Go to bed earlier and don't work on assignments etc late into the night. If I do this even though I'm tired when I stop, my mind doesnt switch off for hours.

The panic that emerges from you realizing it's 3 AM causes you to not be able to go to sleep.

Kind of ironic. It's not really a sleeping problem, and is fairly normal. Not much to do besides going to sleep at 10 or 11.

You're trying the right things, but there's one more. It sounds like you're not getting enough exercise during the day. One of the best ways to get good sleep is to exercise well during the day ( but not right before bedtime).

The absolute worst is to start taking ANY sort of medication. They do not give you restful sleep, are all habit forming and you just need more and more. My son's gf is totally hooked and can't function without drugs now.

My favorite way to fall asleep is to design things. It not only gets me into a pleasnt sleep, when I wake up I feel like I've done something productive..
