It very well could be shin splints, and possible ankle problems. The difference here is that instead of running at a constant pace (in track), you are doing much more start and stop motion in soccer. This places a much different strain on your shins and calves (most likely the strain is greater). Remember that the greatest strain on your shins are with the plant-pivot motions, so in the sand, you had to plant your foot a lot harder in order to get traction (that's why it's harder to run in sand). In soccer you're changing directions much more often than in track. You are also wearing shin guards (I hope) which compresses your entire shin. It sounds like you know about shinsplints, so do what you need to do to get right. Take it easy and when you feel better go out onto the field taped up for shinsplints every practice and game.
