It is just your luck if you get the diseases or not. When I was a baby we got 2 jags, tetanus and diphtheria and a polio syrup and when I was around 12 years old I got the TB jag, when my daughter was a baby she got the same but I never got her vaccinated against whooping caught as there was a lot of bad reports around at that time, the mmr had not been around when she was young but she did get the measles jag, my daughter is now grown and has 2 children of her own who have had all the jags but now there is talk of swine flu and vaccinations are recommended but my daughter and granddaughter cannot get the swine flu jag as they both have an egg allergy and the swine flu jag is cultured on eggs.

Prevention of a disease is key. All my children and I are all vaccinated. There are still those who choose not to, I don't understand why myself.

Yes.
Your friend didn't get sick because of herd immunity. Basically, if most people in a population are immune, the disease cannot survive. Since most people are vaccinated, those who aren't are protected as well. This protects those who are too young to be vaccinated as well as those who can't due to medical reasons. It also protects those who refuse to.
If enough people refuse to vaccinate, there are enough susceptible people for the diseases to return. This happened in the UK when vaccination rates fell and measles returned. It also happened when the Soviet Union collapsed and their health care system fell apart. It is also happening in some communities in the US that don't vaccinated. Basically it doesn't take that much to see the return of vaccine-preventable diseases.
