Does breast cancer diagnosis change as procedures progress.?

When a lumpectomy is done, if clear margins are not obtained (a clear border of non-cancerous tissue totally surrounding the cancerous tissue) then a mastectomy is required.

This is not known for certain until microscopic examination at biopsy.

Your friend should have been advised of this possibility prior to her surgery - I know I was.

It sounds likely that while some lymph nodes were excised as part of the lumpectomy, more were taken as part of the mastectomy.

While no cancerous cells were found in the original lymph biopsy, further biopsy found cancerous cells.

The treatment recommended will depend on full biopsy results as there are various forms of breast cancer which react differently to various treatments.

My friend had a lumpectomy and was about to have a treatment implant when test results required a mastectomy but it lymph nodes weren't involved. Five days after mastectomy physician called her back saying lymph nodes were involved and in two weeks she'd be informed whether she needed a pill or chemo. This is the most common duct cancer and she had mammogram this time last year.
    Is this common?

Well I don't know why they were so back and forth on all of it, sounds like someone didn't have there act together to me.
When I found a lump in my breast I had it biopsied and it came back cancer. My DR sent me for a MRI so they could see how and what tissues were involved and when he did surgery he would know how much breast tissue to remove. While they had me asleep they sent the lymph nodes up to the lab to see how many were affected so they would know how many more needed to be removed.
After a few weeks of healing they had me do chemo treatments for 6 months ( one treatment every 3 weeks) then 4 weeks of 5 days per weeks of radiation. They now have me on Tamoxifen for the next 5 years.
I had 3rd stage breast cancer and there were 23 affected lymph nodes out of 25 that were affected.
So thanks to the good Lord I am still here.
Best of luck and healing to your friend ;)
