The influenza vaccine package insert states that effects on the fetus and pregnancy is UNKNOWN (yet doctors are supposed to tell you that it is 'safe' and recommended for pregnant women.) :-/
So, they probably don't know if crosses the placenta or not.
I think, but not sure...that parts of a placenta are harvested to use in pharmacological products or testing.

The flu shot is safe to get during pregnancy during any trimester. The safety of vaccines is extensively monitored by the CDC and FDA. There is also evidence the vaccine helps protect the baby from the flu after it's born.
The flu, on the other hand, is *NOT* safe to get during pregnancy. A pregnant women is 5 times as likely to be hospitalized for flu complications than a non-pregnant woman. This is why it's important for pregnant women to get vaccinated.
