Dude, is this strep or is it mono?

About a week ago, I started to come down with a headache, chills, and a fever, usually first thing in the morning and at night. This lasted about three days.

On the fourth day, I felt better. I even went jogging as if there was nothing wrong. I went to work on day five and came home very tired.

On day 6, the lymph nodes in my neck were so swollen that I had to put ice on them to help ease my pain! Then on the seventh day, I was hit with THE WORST sore throat I've ever had in my entire life. My tonsils swelled up to the point that they were actually touching.

So, since day 7 was a sunday, I had to wait until monday to visit the doctor. On day 8, the sore throat had worsened. When I spoke, it sounded like I was being gagged... not to mention it felt like it too. When I went to the doctor, I had a low grade fever (like I had been running all week). She took one look into my throat and immediately said it was strep.

She prescribed me Zithromax and told me that if things didn't get better after the medication, that I should be tested for mono. She also told me to take 600mg of motrin every 4 hours to help with the swelling. I have been on the z pack and motrin for almost 48hrs now. It seems that there is less swelling in my throat, however I can see my tonsils, and they literally look like they are completely covered in white mold!!

So, to wrap things up, the reason I am questioning having mono is because I read that the z-pack is not always effective when treating strep (i am allergic to penicillan). Also, I have my appetite (even though I can barely eat because of my sore throat) and I don't have fatigue. I can barely sleep because of my throat being sore.

Anyone that can help me with this will get 10 points!

    Thanks for answering!
update: yes, the sore throat is RIDICULOUS! i have never experienced anything quite like it... and I have had strep before... also, it's more to one side than the other, and my right tonsil is completely white! gross!

Your doctor needs to test you for mono already. You're obviously very sick.
Most frequently, a doctor will test you for strep and mono on the same day. If the mono test comes back negative, they'll take you off the antibiotics when they realize that they're not effective to your disease.
You should wait a few days after being on the antibiotics, however. It can take up to three days before you start to feel better.
    Good luck!
