I take 200mg 5-htp a day and I think it is a great one. Aside from the fact that it seems to improve my mood did I also notice that it takes those "carb cravings" away. I take it in the evening, right before I go to sleep(on a fairly empty stomach is best)and I have to say that I also sleep better.
Of course, I don't know if this would help with clinical depression, but I think that it helps!!!

5 HTP didn't do anything for me (I was forced to try it after they took L Tryptophan off the market for a time).
