The only reason I'm asking this is because we don't have health insurance this week...my husband is about to start a new job; I was trying to avoid a doctor visit for financial reasons, but may have to go anyway. My 6 year old boy has been vomiting for about 12 hours or so, at least once an hour. He's had no sleep and is extremely exhausted. We've been through this many times before, but this time seems a bit different. He's been drinking a lot of water and will answer me if I talk to him; but he's pale, has a fever (i think...can't find thermometer but he feels quite warmer than he would usually feel), and is somewhat lethargic. And he keeps mistaking things in my hand (like a cup of yogurt) for his cup of water. I don't know if his confusion and lethargy is because he's in desperate need of sleep, or if this is something more serious. Although he's not talking much, he makes perfect sense when he talks. So I don't know if I'm overreacting or if he needs to go to the emergency room. Any advice??? What signs should I look for that indicate he may need more help than I can give? Do I just ride it out and let it run it's course?

How do I know if my child needs to go to the Emergency Room?

The confusion part is what makes me think it might be wise to have him seen right away. I know it stinks to have to spend money when you don't want to and there is a chance he is fine, but I am sure you don't really want to take that chance. Good luck!

The lethargy and confusion are worrisome. Is he keeping any water down? Those are signs of dehydration, along with sunken eyes, dry sticky mucous membranes in mouth, crying without tears, no or infrequent urination. If he is urinating regularly, give him some Pedialyte, gatorade or a banana to replace the potassium he's lost from vomiting. Otherwise, I'd take him to the ER.

Err on the side of caution. Take him to the hospital.
