Stress, family history, bad eating habits, no exercise, and lack of sleep can cause high blood pressure.

High blood pressure results when the veins and arteries that make up your circulatory system become less able to adapt to changes by contracting and expanding as necessary. It can also happen if you develop narrowing of those passages from cholesterol deposits, or if the heart is damaged by cardio disease. In some cases, the tendency is genetic and there is no other cardiovascular disease present. Most doctors recommend regular exercise as the best means of fighting it, and watching the amounts of sodium and saturated fats in the diet. As far as getting in two cups of fruits and veggies- it depends on what you are eating and how you prepare it. Most veggies are low cal and low fat by nature. They pick up additional calories in the cooking or eating part- with dips, margarine, sour cream, etc. You can easily eat one cup of carrot sticks, and not shoot the diet foot- but you have to watch the dip. If you just have to have one, stick with the no-fat type, and limit that. You can also get those veggies in things like veggie soup, easily enough. Fruit also is relatively low calorie in the natural state. One banana is a serving- but one cup of dried banana chips is not. Matter of fact, that would be about your entire days serving- and high calorie due to the concentrated sugars. Finally, you can drink one serving in whole fruit juice, or a combo of veg/fruit juice in something like V8. It's possible, but you have to work at it a little.
