There is a bacteria in feces (poop), and when this bacteria gets into your eye (probably from your hands when you rubbed your eye at some point) it infects your eye, which means that the bacteria is multiplying and taking over. A symptom of pink eye is itchiness and runny, sticky tears. When you wake up, your eye will be gunky and gross.
On the occasion when I've touched my eye and my hands were not exactly sanitary, I washed my eye with very warm water and soap. I went to sleep, and when I woke up, I was okay. But I took care of the situation before it progressed. Your eye might be infected, and in that case, you can't wash it and make it better. It has to be treated some other way.
If you have pink eye, it is VERY contagious and you wont be allowed to go to school. The nurse will literally send you home. You will go to the doctor and your doctor will give you anti-biotic eye drops.
But tonight, try washing your face, hands and eye, to the best of your ability. Actually, just get into a hot shower so that you can make sure that nothing on your body has poop germs on it. Change your pillow case too.

It's contagious. If someone rubs his or her eye(s) and have the pink eye, than touches your hands and you start to rub your eyes then you will get pink eye. If so go see your doctor and get treated. If you don't you can get a pretty bad eye infection. Sometimes it can turn out to be virus too. If you had a cold or flu, you can also get pink eye and with a virus you don't need treatments. Just let nature takes its course and make sure to always wash your hands.
