How easy is it to develop diabetes?

I'm young, in shape, and for the most part pretty healthy...
But lately whenever I eat or drink anything with a significant amount of sugar in it I get really lightheaded and feel kind of ill.
It's not energy drinks and sodas and like... pixie stix that are doing this to me either. It's anything with sugar. Orange juice, pasta... things like that.

I also have a tendency to overreact.
I was just hoping someone could give me some advice or insight so that I could at least straighten things out in my head.

    Thanks ahead of time!

Maybe you are just over reacting. If you can afford check your sugar levels. You could buy the sticks from pharmacy that you can dampen with urine and if the colour changes than you have diabetes.

Personally, I do not have any symptoms when my blood sugar is high. But when it is too low, I get headaches, and lose some of my ability to make decisions. Diabetes usually also causes frequent urination at the body tries to flush out the excess sugar.

Take note of when your headaches happen. One standard pattern is for the pancreas to produce lots of insulin when you eat the sugars and starches; and then your blood sugar falls low (rarely dangerously low in a healthy body) after they are processed, and that is when you experience your problems. Diabetics are taught to eat meat and starches together (like steak and potatoes) to help prevent the highs and lows.

You could ask your doctor to do a finger prick test for a first look to see if anything is really out of whack. The next step would be a fasting blood draw if necessary. Hopefully you are worrying about nothing, but you know your body better than anyone else.

    Yeah -- you are overreacting.
    Diabetes doesn't give that symptom.

In fact, diabetes has NO symptoms until you have already had ot for 6-12 months. This is why diabetes is called a "silent killer" -- you don;t KNOW you have it until it is too late.

The BEST thing for you to do is go to the doctor and ASK FOR a test called HbA1C (or just A1C). This test is simple, accurate and cheap. This test is State-of-the-Art for diabetes testing right now. It WILL tell the doctor if you have diabetes.

Have this test repeated once a year, during your yearly physical (you DO have a yearly physical, don't you????) and follow doctor's orders.

If you do this, you can PREVENT diabetes completely.
