How long are you supposed to bleed after an extraction?

I had an extraction about 1 pm today and it is now 10 30, and it still has not stopped bleeding. Up until about 20 minutes ago I have been keeping gauze in my mouth (and changing it to a clean one periodically). However, I am going to sleep now and I am afraid to go to sleep with that in my mouth because I don't want to choke on it. Anyways, is it normal to bleed this much??? I mean it has been more than 9 hours since.
its one of my molars, its not a wisdom tooth

My dentist says that if it bleed, try putting pressure on the gauze for 10 minutes no more then that, use your thumb to apply pressure. However you didn't say where the extraction is so I don't know if you are allowed to do that?

Hopefully you didn't take aspirin for pain.
Usually a clot will form within the first hour, however mild bleeding might continue for 24-36 hours. Changing the gauze is good. Try to keep it in for about half hour at a time. When you remove the gauze be very careful not to disrupt the blood clot. Also avoid chewing with the area.
