It's called sleep paralysis and it's a very common phenomenon.

When you're in REM (or deep) sleep, your body's muscles are mostly disconnected from your brain. This is to keep you from thrashing about while you're dreaming. Experiments have been done on cats where that "disconnect" feature was surgically disabled; the cats would then jump about, chasing imaginary mice in their sleep.

For people, sleep paralysis usually occurs during that "twilight" period, just as we're entering or exiting REM sleep (for me, it was always in the morning); hence the fact that you're semi-aware of what's happening to you. Many people also experience loud noises; a sensation of great weight, as though someone is sitting their chest; or even visions of someone in the room with them. Scary stuff, but all perfectly normal.

Many cultures also offer various supernatural rationale for this phenomenon - stuff like ghosts, demonic possession, succubi, incubi, etc. - but I'm personally satisfied with the medical explanation.
