If you are feeling muscle pain in your back, applying heat will soothe the area better than applying ice to the area. Ice will cause the muscles to contract, making your injury more painful.
Applying ice is a good idea for broken bones and injuries to joints and tendons. Ice brings down the inflammation but it will not do anything for a muscle injury.
I hope you feel better!
Hello,
I am a physical therapist and treat back injuries all the time. Do not use heat until the pain is gone! If you have pain you have inflammation. Use ice, 10 minutes at a time, a few times a day. If the pain goes away and you only have stiffness, then use heat.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
