you have a rescue inhaler to "rescue" you. all asthmatics have one. try using your nebulizer when you're at home. carry the inhaler with you at all times. use the inhaler at least 30 minutes BEFORE exercising. when you cough -you are having an asthma attack. TREAT it. follow up with your pulmonologist.

i am new to having asthma. i saw the lung doctor in march and i do not go back until june. i am taking singular and it is not working at all. i also have a rescue inhaler to, i got the rescue inahler like 2 weeks ago because i got worse and needed it. i have started an asthma journal. from march 19 until thursday i have had 18 asthma attacks. i did call the doctor on Friday to tell him that my singular is not working and he is going to review my chart over the weekend. .Sometimes i get short of breath and stuff like if I exercise and stuff like that and other times I just cough real bad. Half the time I cough I cough real bad to the point where I gag and throw up
P.S i have only taken my inhaler like 4 or 5 times since i got it. i only take it when i can't stop coughing. also the tone day i needed my inhaler and i took it and it never worked, i was still coughing 45 minutes after i took my inhaler that day.
my question is is it bad to have 18 asthma attacks in a month and a half's time

It's not really that bad, there's people who have asthma attacks once a day, almost. At your current state, you should use your albuterol inhaler when you have an asthma attack. That being said, if it starts to get worse and you find yourself using the inhaler almost every day, that's when you'd need to go to the doctor and have them start you off on an inhaled corticosteroid.

Preventative medication can take a month before it has any good effect. 18 Asthma attacks is not good in 6 weeks. You should follow this up sooner rather than later. Try to learn what triggers your asthma, and avoid the triggers (not always possible). It's better to take your puffer before your symptoms get worse. Remember, an asthma attack can kill you. Even if you haven't had a severe one before, there is no guarantee. If your inhaler is not working for you, you may be using it incorrectly. If it's ventolin, and it doesn't work, don't be afraid to use it again after a few minutes. Just don't overdo it.
My son had severe asthma. We had him on all sorts of preventative and reliever medication, which worked well for about 10 years, then everything stopped working. His asthma got worse and worse. In desperation, we did a Buteyko breathing course. It retrained his whole breathing system to not react to his asthma triggers. 5 years on, he is on no medication, and has no asthma attacks. Buteyko is huge in Australia and Russia, and many other countries. Unfortunately, Buteyko hasn't taken off in the U.S., and because of your AMA, it never will. But check it out, it definitely works. Best not to try and teach yourself, you really need to attend a clinic. In Australia, there is a no questions money back guarantee.
