An xray should identify a cracked tooth. Yeah, it's a possibility.

I have a toothache but it's not consistent.?

Most tooth cracks should show up fairly easily. It sounds more like an infection in the root or nerve damage. Although the pain is showing up near one tooth does not mean the source is that exact tooth. I would check with an Endodontist (Dentist that specializes in root canals) for a more thorough exam.

With the stress level people are under nowadays it is totally possible. You can overload these teeth by clenching and grinding. These habits may continue while you sleep and the force can be overwelming. Studies have show that when you clench hard the force equals a little less than two times you weight. The cyclic loading making it possible for a crack for form much less below the strength of the tooth.
