For the last three years I have had what I call episodes where I go into a zone where I can't think, talk very well or function normally. I feel awful during those times which can last up to two hours or so. I find that when I eat if I feel it coming one that it lessens in severity the sooner I eat. I have been hauled to the ER during these times. It usually takes a couple of weeks to feel anything near normal again. I am now eating small meals during the day to keep my blood sugars normal. I am still having these episodes about every four months.

I don't remember him ever giving me any kind of test for Hypoglycemia. Do they just base the diagnosis on what is happening rather than a test?

My blood pressure gets stroke high during these times. I don't feel in control of any of it. The only meds they have me on is a low dose blood pressure med and daily aspirin. Plus LOTS of supplements...

To diagnose hypoglycemia they usually would need to perform a glucose test. This can be done eother with a fingerstick or with blood drawn from the vein. If neither of these were done then he probably based it on your symptoms.

Your symptoms are clear enough, but your doctor probably ALSO did a "finger stick" blood test.

Hypoglycemia is the OPPOSITE of diabetes. Your blood sugar is too low! Still, the same test used to find diabetes ALSO finds hypoglycemia. You probably never knew what the doctor was doing.

In normal people, hypoglycemia is a DIETARY problem. Not only do you need a HEALTHY diet, but you also need enough of it. When you have hypoglycemia, your body is "running out of gas" YOU NEED TO EAT!

You can usually prevent these attacks by eating three healthy meals a day. NEVER skip meals and DO NOT DIET.

AND ALWAYS keep in close touch with your doctor,. There ARE other diseases that can cause hypoglycemia, and these need to be either ruled out or treated.

The test for blood glucose levels is just a simple blood test - its what diabetics do several times per day. The docs should have drawn a blood sample to reach a conclusion about hypoglycemia. A blood sample is pretty much a standard procedure when someone is admitted to an ER. You could use a diabetic monitoring kit to track your blood sugar and see what it is doing.

If no blood sample was taken, your doc could be wrong about the hypoglycemia, or your hypoglycemia could have some underlying cause where eating snacks isn't helping. Alternatively, you might be having mild seizures in stead of hypoglycemia, or you could be having mild strokes (TIA). Low blood sugar could possibly be only a trigger for these other events. Symptoms of hypoglycemia disappear very rapidly after blood sugar levels are restored, so something unrelated to hypoglycemia is still wrong.

The blood pressure problems make it seem like TIA could be a possibility, but i'm not a doc, and its possible that this idea is ridiculous. It would be a good idea to ask your doc to screen you for things other than hypoglycemia that could be causing your problems. It might even be worth asking your doc for a referral to a cardiologist.
