Pick up the phone and call them. Ask them if they run on a Sliding scale. most do. I would suggest a clinic rather then a hospital. Do you have any Urgent Care Centers around you. if you don't know do a search online for them. I think they might run on a sliding scale. You can always go to your health department. They do things for way less.

City and county health clinics charge according to ability to pay. Some churches sponsor health clinics which also charge according to income; they just ask you to donate to help keep the clinics open.
Check with welfare department for human resources. They will have list of clinics to go to.

Check out the Texas Association of Community Health Centers:
http://www.tachc.org/If you scroll down to the bottom, there's a drop-down menu with a list of centers across Texas.
Sometimes drug stores like Walgreens have diabetes screenings. You can also buy a meter for home testing, but they're not a substitute for an official diagnosis at a doctor's office.

Are you in college? Health services might do blood sugar checks for free, and then they might be able to refer you to someone reasonable.
If not walk-in clinics might.
