Although there appears to be link between genetics and bi-polar disorder, there is also environment to be taken into account. Not everyone who has one of the genes that predispose one to bi-polar develops the disorder and there are four types of BPD.

The disorder often develops in the late teens or early adulthood. At least half of all cases start before age 25. Some people have their first symptoms during childhood, while others may develop symptoms late in life. Because of this diversity in presentation, it cannot be absolutely said that if you had it, you'd know by now. When both parents have been diagnosed with BPD, the risk increases 50-75% that you will also develop it.
