Streptococcus mutans is the main culprit for dental caries, or cavities.

    S. mutans is a bacteria which converts sugars into lactic acid which eats away at your teeth.

Sugar is a molecule which is the basis of most foods, such as fruits and other things. Also, starch is a complex sugar (polymer of sugar). Starch is found in vegetables and breads, and other baked goods. As soon as the starch enters your mouth you begin to digest it by breaking it down into sugar.

So if you were some how able to avoid starch and sugar, you may be able to not have cavities, or develop them very slowly. However this would effect your diet to the point that it would be better to brush your teeth twice daily!

It doesn't matter what you eat you still need to take good care of your teeth. If you don't you'll have tons of problems with them later in life. Like them falling out....

You need to think about your high school chemistry. Our saliva has enzymes that can break down carbohydrates into sugar very easily. It also can break protein down into sugar but that takes longer. So, anything you leave between and around your teeth can be broken down into sugar by the enzymes in your saliva. So, brush after meals and before bed and floss every day.

Plaque and bacteria is what makes cavities.....as long as you brush for at least 2 minutes twice a day and you are flossing every night before bedtime, this should keep the cavity bugs away!!
    Brush
    Floss
See you dentist every 6 months to keep problems away!!

    Good Luck!!
