If I have a fasting blood sugar of 146, should I be on diabetes medicine?

(I have had one blood test. My doctor says that if I have two blood tests with a fasting blood sugar level over 126, then I am definitely diabetic. So, if my next diabetes test is in the same range, I wonder if I will be on medicine.)

It should not be over 110. If it is high, it could be from stress. Your blood sugar fluctuates all day. Get checked by a doctor as soon as possible. Good luck!

Yes, you will probably be put on Metformin if you have another high fasting blood sugar test. The body likes blood glucose to be at a concentration of 5 mM (= 90 mg/dL) so 146 is 62% higher than what it should be! What this probably means is that your adipose cells are becoming resistant to insulin signaling because they are getting so full.

Fortunately, if it's only 146 that means your pancreas is still functioning and you can be put on oral diabetic meds such as metformin (which is commonly the first prescribed), or possibly glipizide if it's determined that you won't respond well to metformin.

Although it hasn't been validated by major scientific research, small studies have suggested that adding levocarnitine and cinnamon supplements to your diet may also help your body manage and dispose of glucose properly.

Yes. The most likely medication is Metformin. Its THE gold standard of oral diabetes meds and the safest one to take. It can also help with weight loss.

It can cause some stomach upset when you first start taking it, so they put you on a very low dose and gradually increase it.

If it still causes problems for you try the yogurt treatment I discuss in this post

Your doctor may tell you to cut back on carbs, and get more exercise, which should help, but you really should be on metformin with those numbers, not just diet and exercise alone.

    Good luck!
