Ok well I'm also scared of needles and I got my blood drawn for the first time 2 weeks ago. I will tell you now, it doesnt *hurt* but you will feel a pinch when the needle enters you. I'm gonna warn you though... DON'T LOOK! Don't look while they insert the needle, and don't look while they suck the blood out. I looked and i passed out :P It's a normal reaction from your brain to faint when it sees you are losing blood so just don't look and you will be fine! Don't worry it will be over before you know it =]

If the nurse doing it knows what's she's doing, it won't hurt hardly at all, no more than a shot does.

The first thing to do is relax. Tensing up does you no good. I had my first blood test at the age of 9 when I was diagnosed with Type 1 (insulin) diabetes. I am now much older now. To help me cope is by having my iPod and listening to music when the blood is being taken. I also tend to look away.

    I hope this helps you.

I know how you feel. I had my first blood test about a year ago. I visited the doctor first, who suggested I have a blood test to see if I had diabetes (which i didn't.). seeing as there was a place just around the corner where they did the tests, the doctor first put some cream on my arm then wrapped it up to keep it from rubbing off. It numbed my arm, and all I felt was a bit of pressure. I'm afraid of needles too lols, just try not to look at the needle, because it makes it harder ;) also, tell the nurse you are afraid of needles. I told my nurse that, and she used the smallest needle possible. It's not as scary as people make it out to be :) I also found that listening to my iPod on full volume helped lol. Good luck!

  6. It doesn't really hurt that much, it's more like a sting, but then while your blood is being taken out, it doesn't hurt at all, as long as you stay still. You might feel kinda dreamyish (if thats a word?), while they're taking the blood out (and sometimes afterwards, too). But the weird part is that it hurts more when they take the needle out than when they stick it in or during the actual blood test (which is weird). Don't be that scared, but not staring at it and distracting yourself, like listening to music or reading helps (although personally I just stare at it cause, well, iunno, actually.. o-o;;) good luck, don't be too stressed about it (:

Hi I am a retired nursing professional. The actual stick is more or less about as painful as a bee sting nothing more and if you get a really great lab tech if can sometimes be absolutely pain free honest. Most of the time it's the anticipation of the stick that is worse. Trust me you will do just fine, Good Luck
