Is it normal for an oral surgeon to suggest not using gauze after the extraction of wisdom teeth?

    I just had my wisdom teeth removed this afternoon, and the oral surgeon told me not to use any gauze unless I start absolutely gushing blood. Is this normal? Before my appointment, I read everywhere that I need to use gauze on and off for a few hours after surgery.
