They are the same. All calories are equal as you said. It doesn't really matter if you eat regular table sugar or high fructose corn syrup. The difference is very small. Table sugar is made up of 50% glucose and 50%fructose. HFCS is made up of 55% fructose and 45% glucose. As far as health effects there is no difference between the two. Each of them contribute 4cal/gram. So if you are trying to control your wt it doesn't matter what type of sugar you consume, it has more to do with the volume of sugar you consume.
