This is more minor than major. Maybe somewhere in the middle. Good luck!

Is thyroid surgery considered major or minor surgery?

A major surgery is any surgery in which the patient must be put under general anesthesia and given respiratory assistance because he or she cannot breathe independently and a minor surgery does not involve anesthesia or a respirator. So, a thyroidectomy is considered a major surgery and a mole removal is an example of a minor surgery.
Nerve damage and vocal cord paralysis can occur, that's why it's important to have an expert surgeon. I'm wishing you the best when you find out from pathology whether it's benign or not...fingers crossed. Good luck with everything!

My endocrinologist has recommended surgery for a 6mm nodule on my thyroid. My blood tests are all inconclusive and "murky" and the fine-needle biopsy was also inconclusive. My current risk of cancer is considered less than 20% at this time.
I will see a surgeon later this month to have the nodule and half of my thyroid removed. I was debating with someone earlier today and was wondering... Obviously, this is a major event in my life, but when medical personnel talk about thyroid surgery, do they consider the surgery "major surgery" or a "minor surgery"?I know that it's not exactly a lung transplant or a heart bypass, but it's not the removal of a cyst from my finger either... Just how serious is this operation?
