When you exceed your usual range of motion which can happen just by walking, it is pretty common to get that achilles tendon pain. It is often accompanied with some soreness in the front of the ankle. I get the same thing when I run hard on irregular terrain. The best thing to do is calf raises, lunges, jumping and squats. These exercises will directly and indirectly strengthen your ankles and will help you in your rowing.
