Cardiac arrest, (also known as cardiopulmonary arrest or circulatory arrest) is the cessation of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to contract effectively,[1] and if this is unexpected can be termed a sudden cardiac arrest or SCA.
A cardiac arrest is different from (but may be caused by) a heart attack, where blood flow to the muscle of the heart is impaired.[2]
Arrested blood circulation prevents delivery of oxygen to the body. Lack of oxygen to the brain causes loss of consciousness, which then results in abnormal or absent breathing. Brain injury is likely if cardiac arrest goes untreated for more than five minutes.[3][4][5] For the best chance of survival and neurological recovery, immediate and decisive treatment is imperative.[6]
Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that, in certain situations is potentially reversible if treated early. When unexpected cardiac arrest leads to death this is called sudden cardiac death (SCD).[1] The treatment for cardiac arrest is cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to provide circulatory support, followed by defibrillation if a shockable rhythm is present. If a shockable rhythm is not present after CPR and other interventions, clinical death is inevitable.

Hey Sophia I wish I was a Heart DR and could 4 sure answer your question. I am not however I am a heart patient with a LOT of genetic history in my family. On my dads side (grandfather, uncles and so on) had heart attacks and open heart surgery @ a young age. That was way back when. My mom and dad had 4 children myself (melissa) 1 sister and 2 brothers. My oldest brother @ the age of 24 had a major heart attack (survived) now 48. Next my sister (born with a hole in her heart) and died @ the age of 3 months old. ( this was back in the 60's and not much was known about this @ that time) Next my other brother (now 43 no heart prob. that we know of) and myself (age 39) I lived a perfectly normal childhood (run, play, jump, cheerleading) Got married 2 years after marriage got pregnant with my first born son ( had smoothering problems during labor my DR passed it off as a large baby) 7 years later. Still no illness of any kind.Healthy heart as far as I knew. I changed jobs and this job required a complete physical. I filled out papers about heart history @ this visit. He said lets do an EKG just to be safe. I heard the DR running down the hallway opened the door and said " R U ok" I laughed and said Well I was but what's wrong. He replied I'm sending U to a heart dr. I think U have a hole in your heart and its so big you could through a clot any second and not make it. Long story short I had Atriel Septical Defect (hole in my heart) still no systoms. Dr's put me straight into surgery had open heart surgery 10 years ago. It was repaired and I have no problems at all with it. I now also have a 4 year old little girl. Dr's told me to def. have my children checked because it was genetic and could be passed to them or skip them and go to my grandchildren. Thank God it missed both of my children. I hope this helps U in some way. Stay cool and try not to worry. It could skip U as well. I hope so. If you find out please let me know. melissajacks@netzero.com Melissa
