We just want an idea of what's going on but nothing and it's scary as hell because we have no clue if there is going to be another one tonight. Why can't they tell us after 2 cat scans and an MRI?

  2. What causes a stroke should be clear to any medical doctor. What exactly is he looking for and what do you need to know?

Sometimes, there is no scan of any kind that can show where the occlusion is occurring in the brain that is causing the strokes. Additional procedures may be needed to locate the source of the problem. Hopefully, your father is under the care of a neurosurgeon.

Stroke is caused by a blocked or burst blood vessel.

You may want to look into DHA+EPA omega-3 fatty acids to help improve cardiovascular health.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends the use of omega-3 fatty acids in the prevention of strokes and heart diseases.

in an infarct ct brain finding will be visible only after at least six hours, so a repeat scan can give you the diagnosis.also neurology consultation advised.

There are many causes of stroke. You don't mention if this was an ischemic/embolic stroke (from a clot) or a hemorrhagic stroke (bleed).
Causes of ischemic/embolic stroke can be from clots forming in the heart or carotid arteries that travel to the brain and lodge there. Low blood pressure can cause ischemic stroke. Hypercoagulable states can increase the chances of developing a clot. Very high blood pressure can also cause stroke.
An echocardiogram and carotid duplex or CT angiogram of the carotid arteries should be done. A hypercoagulable blood test panel can also be sent.
A neurologist should be consulted and if hypercoagulable state is possible then a hematologist should be consulted.

Not that easy to tell. A blood clot(s) has come from somewhere and lodged in the brain causing a lack of oxygen to a part of the brain.

Where did the clot come from? A hardened artery somewhere, liver, pancreas, lung, kidney, heart. legs ( common).

I know it's hard but you can be assured that the doctors are as eager to find the spot as you are.

Once the spot is found they will try to dissolve any clots. There may be some loss of ability ( speech , motor, memory etc.) from the dead cells in the brain.

The stroke may also have been caused by an opening in the artery in the brain which caused blood to leak out and drown some cells.

As you can see, MANY tests etc. are needed to find out what happened.
