  2. Its wonderful that you are such a concerned daughter; you must love your dad very much.
The problem is that he knows all these things are dangerous illnesses, not to mention his smoking. You can't make him change though. He is making his decision about it and nothing you can say will change his mind.
If he keeps this up, he will probably have many complications down the road. He could have a heart attack, stroke, his diabetes could get completely out of control if he doesn't take care of it now. The only thing you can do is just be there for him.

Until he decides on his own to quit there isn't much you can say. With all the advertising about smoking being bad for a person he knows but only he can do something about it.

Diabetes eventually causes lack of feeling in te nerve endings, feet, hands etc. This changes the circulation of the blood in the extremities and can in time lead to the AMPUTATION of limbs.
The high blood pressure can cause a stroke and smoking adds to the complications. A stroke could leave him just about helpless. The High Blood Pressure could lead to a heart attack with dire results. The smoking causes the arteries to close up and then up goes the blood pressure again. To be brutal your Dad might not reach 60 if he continues doing these things.
Hope you sort him out as to stop smoking now could almost reverse the process within 10 years. Unfortunately diabetes will be with him for good but if he controls his diet, stops smoking and takes moderate exercise then the effects of it can be reduced.

High Blood Pressure is more dangerous than diabetes. I suppose that exercise is out of the question. So meds. are the only other way to lower it. Nothing this side of hell is going to make him quit smoking. Maybe a stroke or heart attack will change his mind.

    I am a Type 2 diabetic.

Seems like your father is in denial. This is common among Type 2 diabetics as well as depression. Bascially newly diagnosed diabetic has to change thier lifestyle and learn to manage their diabetes which is like a 2nd job.

If your father doesn't want to learn or care about his condition then youshould learn about it. There is a lot of learning and education that is involved with Diabetes and you will be surprised of the everyday things that are not really healthy or good for you. Constantly remind him

Most Diabetes will normally have high blood pressure, high chlorestrol, and a host of other things. Diabetics are more prone to heart attacks.

Ultimately your father is a grown man. He is going to do what ever he wants because he thinks he feels fine. I know this hurts and is sad. This is why I am suggesting you learn about diabetes so when an emergency should happen you are prepared.

While he is "feeling fine" he is destroying his kidney functions, his eyesight, his arterties and heart. It will only be a matter of time before something breaks down sadly. I can feel fine and check my Blood Sugar and it is sky high because I am use to it being that way. Once I have it lowered...I do feel a little weak. Lowering the BS is like being a drug addict. When you are high you feel good. As soon as the sugar is lowered even though it is healther for you it makes you feel weak and light headed. Like a drug addict you feel bad when you loose your high and are sober.

    I hope this helps.

  7. Go to the American Diabetic Association's website, diabetes.org.
It is great. It explains everything, gives sample diets, talks about meds and exercise. And I found that the site is easy to use.
And yes, it talks about what can happen if diabetes is not managed.
And for the high blood pressure, the American Heart Association's website. Again, it explains things well.
Diabetes and cardiovascular disease walk hand in hand, one aggravates the other, one leads to the other, period. And smoking aggravates them both.
A well balanced diet, with minimal caffeine, watching fat and cholesterol content, quitting or cutting down on smoking, exercising, and taking the medications doctor has prescribed leads to control of all of it.

American Diabetes Association - www.diabetes.org - go to this site & get it from the pros. If your not an American, they can point you to the Diabetes association in your area. Diabetes is something he will have to live with for the rest of his life. You're a good daughter to be concern, get all the info from the website & give it to him. Also remember that Diabetes runs in the family. Predisposition, they call it, so there's a chance you will have it when you are older so it wouldn't hurt that everyone in your household should take stock of what you eat. Eat Healthy, Live healthy.
