I tore a ligament in my finger and my ankle (twice). For the ankle either time, I was not in a cast, but I was on crutches for like a week or so. They gave me a brace to put around my ankle so I wouldn't move and damage the ankle even more. When I first tore it, it felt like a F****** B****, and once the pain went all over my foot which was even more of a b****. There was a lot of swelling the first time but not to much the second time, so not really I guess lol. I don't know what you mean by switching sides but like I said the pain went throughout my foot the first time.

I did my left ankle when I was playing football.

I didn't get a cast just one of them inflatable socks that cushion it.. Just had to stay of it for a week or so. Then I had crutches for a week then after I could hobble.
It was a sharp pain that changed into a numbing one. If I knocked my foot to the side, say if I knocked my toe then it would absolutely kill and take-over my entire foot and up my shin.

At first there was swelling/bruising just as when you twist or sprain it. it lasted the same amount of time as then but the pain carries on and there is a distinct lack of strength or stability in the ankle.
The pain never switched sides as such but if I knocked it then it did strain other areas of the foot becuase it was weak and couldn't prevent twisting like before.

Couldn't run/jog for about 4 months. Couldn't run/sprint without discomfort for 12 months. Didn't feel right for 18 months. Played football again 2 and a half years after the initial injury.

    Everyone is different though.

Many years ago, I injured the ligament in my right ankle. I did not get a cast, but I did have an Ace bandage on it for at least two months. I was on crutches for six weeks. The doctor told me it would have been better to break a bone than to tear a ligament because of the recovery time. The pain was absolutely horrible. I could not put any pressure or weight on the foot whatsoever. The pain always stayed in the same spot. There was quite a bit of swelling, but never a bruise. I had to ice my ankle three times a day for 20 minutes.
