I did my left ankle when I was playing football.
I didn't get a cast just one of them inflatable socks that cushion it.. Just had to stay of it for a week or so. Then I had crutches for a week then after I could hobble.
It was a sharp pain that changed into a numbing one. If I knocked my foot to the side, say if I knocked my toe then it would absolutely kill and take-over my entire foot and up my shin.
At first there was swelling/bruising just as when you twist or sprain it. it lasted the same amount of time as then but the pain carries on and there is a distinct lack of strength or stability in the ankle.
The pain never switched sides as such but if I knocked it then it did strain other areas of the foot becuase it was weak and couldn't prevent twisting like before.
Couldn't run/jog for about 4 months. Couldn't run/sprint without discomfort for 12 months. Didn't feel right for 18 months. Played football again 2 and a half years after the initial injury.
Everyone is different though.
