Possible broken hand, Do I go to the ER?

I have the bad luck to not have health insurance. I'm super accident prone and I knocked the pinky side of my hand (not the finger, the side of the palm) into a door frame. This was 5 days ago. Every day it hurts more and throbs, but it doesn't hurt if i don't use it at all. Well, I'm a stay at home mom and it's not like I can call in sick.

I guess there's a possibility it's broken, but I don't have insurance. What I need to know is if I go to the ER are they just going to wrap it in an ace bandage and give me pain meds (which I can't take because I have to take care of the baby) or will they cast it? Is it a waste of my money? Just looking to find out what the treatment would be to see if it's worth my money.

idk possibly give u an x ray and see if anything is broken and cast it and if its not broken they would probably just tell u to give it a few days and take some tylenol

It would probably be very swollen and bruised if it were broken. You would probably not be able to move it very much also. You run the risk of permanent damage if it is broken and heals wrong, but if it doesn't hurt when sitting still then it might be cracked or bruised (the bone). I would look for a clinic in the area or call about free care. I suppose you could splint it and baby it. (go to a medical supply store to get a splint). Good Luck!

An xray would tell if it is broken. If it is broken it would be casted. If it is sprained an ace wrap would do. If it were me I would ice it, ace bandage it and limit use for one week(hard as a single mother) . If it still hurts I would have to spend the money for an xray....try some alleve too....this helps with inflammation which can be painful....

    Good luck
