Question about retainer?

(5 posts)
  1. Well I just got my braces off last thursday, and just got my retainer yesterday. My orthodontist told me that I only need to wear it at night time after dinner. So I put it in and it was a little sore, but my orthodontist said it would loosen up. I can get it on really easy but it takes a bit of work for me to get them off (he said that was also normal). Overall they fit really good. Here's the problem though, last night was my first night wearing them, and I did exactly what my ortho said. Then I woke up at 5:30. My retainer wasn't in my mouth! Both top and bottom were not in my mouth! Luckily I found them, one in my bed, the other on the floor next to my bed (i was really nervous my dog got them because she sleeps in my room). I was just wondering, how could they possibly fall out of my mouth? They fit well, and my teeth haven't really shifted, and it takes some effort to get them out! Is this normal? I'm worried about wearing them tonight because I don't want to lose them after 2 days.

Also if your wondering, I use a clear, plastic retainer, top and bottom.

Its very possible that you felt a little sore since they are still tight and popped them out in your sleep. Sounds odd, but many other patients have done it. My ortho office instructs patients to wear their retainers Full time for the first week (other than eating) to help teeth re-adjust and then night time after to "retain"! If you're up to it, try wearing it a few extra hours during the day so it fits more comfortably and then you won't pop them out!

Im pretty sure your retainer is fit for your condition AT THE TIME. so if you didnt wear it then, i suggest you not wear it now and consult your dentist immediately. would you rather do that or get braces again for another few years?

You should be fine, I guess. But wear it.

Yes your retainer will move your teeth back as long as the movement is minimal. Wear it consistently until there isn't any pain when you put it on, and it's loose fitting. After three or four months, if you decide that you don't want to wear it anymore then gradually move out of them going from a every day to every other day and so on. However, always check to make sure that it's fitting well, and if they move again, just wear the retainer. If they move too much though then you have to worry about getting the braces back on which is never ideal.
