I broke my nose saturday while playing in a basketball game. A girl stole the ball from one of my teamates and went to turn around to dribble up the court and I didn't have time to move. Her head collided with my nose and broke it. One of my teamates mom's is a nurse and she made me go to the emergency room. We went and they took xrays and said it was broken and to get an appointment with an ear, nose, and throat doctor today. I am 17 and I'm scared they are going to have to do surgery. It is shifted to the left a decent amount and it is not very stable when you put pressure on it. Is surgery likely? If so, what all would they have to do and how painful would the recovery be? Do you know what the appointment will be like tomorrow?

Yep, been there done that, had a nose job.
The first thing the doctor will do is either take more x-rays or look at the ones you have. The he will probably look inside your nose, to see how far the septum is deviated. He will be gentle, but unfortunately, it will hurt.
If he thinks he can set it, he will. Not going to lie, it hurts like hell. However, be still and your doctor will be as quick and gentle as possible, I promise. They know it hurts.
If he decides you need surgery, he cannot make you do it, he will tell you the pros and cons of it.
If he does tell you that you need surgery, go ahead and do it, yes its painful and a pain in the butt. However, if you let the septum heal deviated, it will eventually have to be fixed and the will require your nose to be re-broken and then operated on, which makes the healing process longer.Your eyes are probably black and you cannot breathe at the moment. Sleeping in a recliner or on several pillows helps a whole lot, if you try to sleep on your back or side, it will be horribly painful.
I will spare you on all the gory details on the public site, if you want them, feel free to IM/email me. I will tell you about it, in detail if you like.
Good luck, hun. It will be okay.
