Swimming after Thyroidectomy?

If you didn't discuss this with your dr. I don't know why you wouldn't have. He is the one you should be listening to for if you do go swimming without his o.k. and something happens to you or the incision, you won't have any recourse open to you for not listening to him. I don't care what kind of surgery I just had or how well I think I feel, I would always make it a point to have the dr. o.k. what I was getting into.

I had a partial thyroidectomy last Friday (left half only). I feel about 90 percent back to normal, yet my neck looks otherwise. I can drive, move my neck around normally, and I've stopped taking the pain medication. However, the surgeon put dermabond glue to cover the incision (no wire stitches and/or staples), and the glue is still there. The doctor said the glue would turn white and fall off in about a week or two, but that hasn't happened yet.

I wanted to go swimming tomorrow to restart my exercise regiment. It was going to be extremely light, and I understand that it is best to gradually work myself up before fully exerting myself. Would it be an issue if I was in the water for 45 minutes to an hour? The purpose of this is to get my legs moving, because I've been a lazy couch potato for the past 6 days :-)

Any relevant input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!
I forgot to ask my doctor.

First, it would be best to phone your Doctor and ask him directly. I had this operation as well and I would have to recommend that you forgo swimming at this early stage. Although the incision site sounds as though it is doing well, you can never tell what may be lurking in the water - particularly if it is a public pool or one that is used for different purposes. Chlorine doesn't promise complete freedom from issues in the water.

To be safe, check with your Doctor first. He may be able to offer you a way in which you can do this safely and without any concerns for contracting any infection or bacterial issues.

    Good luck.
