What are some good things to eat when diabetic? and what should I avoid?

  1. I have been diagnosed with PCOS and along with that comes Insulin Resistance. My doctor prescribed me Metformin, birth control pills, and told me to lose weight. Well its nearly impossible to lose weight with insulin resistance. I did it once before taking prescription diet pills and pretty much starved the weight off. I want to lose weight the right way and be healthy this time. My question is, what are the worst foods I need to stay away from in order to lose weight?? I was told to follow a diabetic diet but since Im not diabetic yet I didnt get to see a nutritionalist. If you have diabetes, what are some good things to eat??

  2. I am a type 2 diabetic with no medications (yet). Just diet and exercise.

I lost 45 pounds in 3 months. I just limit my daily calories to 800-1000 per day.

Figure out your basil metabolic rate (calories just to stay alive), and only eat that many calories in a day.

If you cut out 250 calories a day from what you have been eating, you can lose about 2 pounds a week.

If you are hungry, eat some nuts. 1 cup of nuts can give you 1/3 to 1/2 of your daily calories and keeps you full for a longer period of time.

Eat sugar free jello with sliced strawberries in it. Very low calorie, tastes good too.

Stay away from all forms of sugar and ALL wheat products. Root veggies are usually bad too, like potatoes, carrots, yams/sweet potatoes, and the like.

Eat a low carb, low fat diet. Google "foods that a diabetic can eat" & "foods that a diabetic should avoid" for more complete lists.

I eat eggs, grapefruit, nuts, sirloin cheeseburgers (no bread) with onion on them, chicken breast, tuna, cod, pork, strawberries, blueberries, amongst other low carb items.

And I am never hungry. Also, eat 1/5th of your daily calories every 2-3 hours.

Be VERY wary of what ANY nutritionist/dietitian says for you to eat.

They want you to eat 75g of carbs, 3 times a day, plus 2 - 15g carb snacks.

Your blood sugars WILL be sky high with that kind of eating, unless you are on meds. Plus you will have trouble losing weight on those diets too.

I follow the South Beach Living phase 2 food plan. Very low carb grams, sufficient protein and fats to maintain the bod. Take a good multi vitamin supplement and you will be fine.

My downfalls are milk and milk products, grain products, root veggies and soft sweet fruits. That leaves lots of salad stuff and meats! Yes, you can get sufficient fiber from the veggies for salad to do without any of the grain products. If you don't make the mistake of leaving out all the saturated fats, you won't be hungry even eating very small meals. Saturated fats do not make us fat nor do they give us heart disease. They are the natural fats available and satiate hunger.

Note: there is no such thing as a "diabetic diet".
