Some use weakened live viruses, ex. Sabin polio vaccine
Some use dead viruses, ex. Salk polio vaccine.
Some use parts of a virus or bacteria, ex. influenza.
Some use killed bacteria, older pertussis vaccine.
Some use a inactive toxin, ex. tetanus.

Vaccine ingredients are listed in the package inserts. http://www.fda.gov/BiologicsBloodVaccines/Vaccines/ApprovedProducts/ucm093833.htm In each package insert, look under the heading, Description, which is either on page 1 or in Section 11. Some examples of ingredients, in no particular order, are aluminum, formaldehyde, MSG, mercury, fetal bovine serum, antibiotics, and cell fragments and DNA from human fetuses aborted in the 1960's. For that you'll need to look for the code words WI-38, RA 27/3, and
MRC-5. The rotavirus vaccines are contaminated with the pig viruses PCV1 and PCV2. Those are not listed in the package inserts. Many other vaccines will soon be found to be contaminated with animal viruses, because a new testing technique has been discovered to test for such contamination.
