You're exactly right, you should be more careful about what you put on your skin than what you put in your mouth. Anything that goes in your mouth has the benefit of your filtering organs to help filter out the toxins. Anything put directly on your skin is in your blood stream within minutes...with no help from your liver or kidneys to filter out the bad junk. Having said that I'm afraid I have to strongly disagree with the 'sound bite' comment. I've done hundreds of hours of research looking for a safe sunscreen to sell in my health food store. I found exactly ZERO! The sunscreen industry is a billion dollar business. American's spend more money on sunscreen than any other civilized country and we still have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. How can you explain that? Sunscreen products are full of harsh ingredients and chemical preservatives that are horribly bad for your skin as well as your overall health. So, let's put cancer causing ingredients all over our skin in hopes of avoiding cancer...think about it. There are alternatives. First everyone should avoid prolonged exposure to the hot mid day sun...11am to 2pm. You can use coconut oil like Honesty suggested, or olive oil. Both have a natural SPF of about 10. The latest research is showing that sun exposure in modest amounts can actually work as a cancer prevention. Good luck an be well.

    Shade.

However, assuming you'd prefer to actually be IN the sun and perhaps moving around; according to the source that is referenced below, coconut oil and papaya juice are good.

Look, the best is if you could use entirely natural protection. Everybody advertise as natural but today it doesn't mean much, as anything that has a percentage of natural ingredients could be advertised as natural. It is difficult to create a completely natural cosmetics. I have searched and found one cosmetic line and I am using them a lot. Personally I am very happy as well as my family, and it is entirely natural, without chemicals, parabens, emulsifiers, perfume or colors. Check www.duchetrading.com , section Sano Vita, maybe you will like it also (they have as well online brochure).

P.S. no matter what do you put as a protection you should still avoid strong sun :-)

"they say don't put anything on your body that u can't eat"

I'm afraid that's what they call a sound bite; sounds great, means absolutely nothing. There's nothing wrong with standard sunscreen and the alternative (skin cancer) isn't worth thinking about.

Hint: 'Patents' are not a source of information. The patent for a time machine is proof of that!

@ medicine woman - I have never laughed so hard as I just did reading your post.

Firstly - "Anything that goes in your mouth has the benefit of your filtering organs to help filter out the toxins. Anything put directly on your skin is in your blood stream within minutes...with no help from your liver or kidneys to filter out the bad junk"

Judging by your name I assume that you have some formal medical training? If this is the case then you would know that the liver and kidneys filter "the bad junk" out of your blood stream regardless of how it got there. Also the skin is an extremely efficient barrier to "bad junk", the majority of chemicals rubbed on your skin will not make it into your bloodstream, the majority of chemicals that you eat will, that is how pills work.

Secondly - "American's spend more money on sunscreen than any other civilized country and we still have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world"

America does not have the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, Australia does, by a massive margin. I can believe that they spend the most money on sunscreen because it is an affluent nation with a hot climate in the southern States and is mostly inhabited by people with a European genetic heritage. But this fact becomes totally irrelevant when you consider the low rates of skin cancer.

I am by no means standing up for sunscreens as they do contain some chemicals that have a possibility of degrading into carcinogens when exposed to high levels of UV light, nor am I claiming that certain naturally occurring oils are effective because I simply don't know anything about them. I am simply saying that if you are going to attack something, make sure you get your facts correct. Personally I'm going to be sticking to my Nivea factor 30 for the foreseeable future!
