Not eating for a period of time.

  3. Fasting is when you do not eat or drink anything, except maybe water.

It is required prior to performing blood work, major surgery, certain medical exams & procedures, and the like.

Some people do it for religious reasons. Muslims fast during the day time during the month of Ramadan for example.

Others do it to 'clean out their system'. Usually for no more than 1-3 days.

Fasting means going a period of time without eating. It can be used in religious ceremonies or for alternative health purposes. Fasting, in terms of diabetes, is two things:

    1) your fasting blood sugar is your first blood sugar of the day, just after you wake up, before you eat breakfast.

    2) fasting for several hours can help a person with diabetes on an insulin pump determine whether or not their background insulin (either Lantus/Levemir from an injection or Humalog from a basal rate on a pump) is satisfactory to maintain blood sugar levels without additional food/insulin. Fasting prevents carbohydrates from affecting the blood sugar level, leaving you with a better sense of what your natural state actually is.

fasting glucose level is the amount of sugar in your blood before having breakfast.
