I have a family with diabetes. (They are 8 blood relatives with diabetes). I do not but know how to deal with it. First, is eat things that less sugar dense. Which means you have to eat things that will fill you up will less sugar. An example would be a cookie and apple (those big red ones) both have the same amount of calories but you an apple is more food, while a cookie is tiny. Also, stay away from simple carbs (a link in source that goes into detail of the differences). The gist of the website is complex carbs take longer to digest so you don't feel hungry as fast as simple carbs. I pretty much follow this diet too because I can get diabetes in a heartbeat since I have the genes and I haven't gotten it yet.
I forgot something. Try to consume omega fats (unsaturated) instead of regular fats (saturated). Saturated clogs your arteries. It's very easy for a diabetic to clog them. Instead of milk drink fortified soy milk (So Nice is a good one). Not only does it give you the same calcium (pure soy milk has less calcium), but it has omega's and protein and it isn't filled with all simple carbs, but half is simple and half in complex.
