I had a complimentary "visit" today at the orthodontist..this first visit is basically getting an idea of what you want to accomplish with braces, etc etc. They took photos of my teeth from every angle including photos of my face..they also looked at my pano xray that I had taken at the dentist a few weeks ago..if you haven't had that done, they may do that..my next appointment in two weeks is to take more xrays, take the mold of my teeth so the orthodontist can work up a plan for my teeth..then I go back a week after that to get his recommendations and officially start the braces process. Tho I do have to get a wisdom tooth out on the 28th :( and they cant do anything with braces for two weeks after that so the soft tissue has time to heal. So if all goes well I should be in them mid may? Good luck!!

  2. My dentist has been telling me repeatedly that i've been needing braces. So he gave my dad an orthodontist and got right away with it. My dad called the orthodontist and my first appointment is on THURSDAY (in THREE days) at 5 pm.

Anyone know what to expect? And how many appointments until the actual day to get braces?
    I'm so excited :)))

I use to have braces, and the first time i went in they just examined my mouth took pictures of my teeth and made a mold of my teeth. My mouth was crowded so they had to put spacers in between my teeth. They don't hurt but they were uncomfortable. I went back a few days later and they took the spacers out and cleaned my teeth. They put every little bracket piece on my teeth and then put the wire through them and then i got to chose the color i wanted. I expected it to be a lot worse than it actually was, so don't worry.

Your 1st visit is usually a consultation. They might do a panorex x-ray that shows your whole jaw and all of your teeth. They could also do impressions at the 1st visit. Everyone starts braces at different times. You might need to have other work done before the braces?

As it's your first one they will literally just look in your mouth and address your teeth and see what needs to be done. They MIGHT do some moulds, but i doubt very much that they will do that on your first appointment. If they do then all they literally do is put some paste into like a device which fits over your teeth. They put that into your mouth filled with some paste (which taste's horrible) and leave it for about 2 minutes whilst it sets. They then pull that out and do the bottom or top jaw whichever one they didn't do. You may also have a wax bite done, they make you close your teeth and then squirt wax between your bite, or they give you a bit of warm wax to bite on.
This will just be to give them a representation of your jaw and teeth as a mould.

You may also have to go and have x-rays done, these are not counted as part as your orthodontic appointment. You go in and remove jewellery and belts etc. You then stand and rest your head in a machine. Bite down on a piece of plastic which they show you, put your hands on the machines, and it just moves around your head a few times both directions.

I am guessing that most of that will happen in your second or third appointment but be prepared. Nothing hurts. Good luck :)

OK well on my first appointment it was just a consultation. They will be dicussing what they will be doing with your teeth. And then from their on you will be getting impressions and maybe spacers. They do not hurt, well the spacers might a little. Once you get to the point to actually getting your braces on, you will be a little nervous. They do not hurt to get on! BUT your teeth WILL BE SORE for a few days afterwords!! Be sure to eat lots of mushey foods!!!!

    I hope this helped!!
